2024 was quite an exciting year for Star Wars fans. With the release of The Bad Batch Season 3, Tales of the Empire, The Acolyte, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, and Skeleton Crew, we came across many different sides of the universe. Between the reveal of Qimir and the conclusion of the Clones' arc, we were introduced to several new characters and saw some old ones in a new light.
The next year promises to be an equally fun one for the Star Wars fandom. Although there are no new feature films scheduled to be released, there are TV shows, video games, and books to keep us busy. We can also peek at the projects in development.
Let's take a look at everything Star Wars has planned for 2025.
Movies
Unfortunately, Star Wars has no movies planned for 2025. The franchise has not released any feature films since 2019's The Rise of Skywalker, and this would be the sixth year in a row without any. However, fans may not have to wait for too long. There is already one movie with a confirmed release date, and several others are expected to go into development in the coming months.
Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian & Grogu (May 2026)
The Disney+ "Mandoverse" centered on the New Republic has kept the fans glued to the franchise in the absence of movies and will soon get its first film. The Mandalorian & Grogu, helmed by Jon Favreau, has finished production and is slated to be released on May 22, 2026. This is separate from Dave Filoni's unnamed New Republic-Mandoverse crossover movie, although he has co-written this movie with Favreau. The movie is likely to replace the storyline of The Mandalorian season 4.
The movie will feature Pedro Pascal in the lead role of the Mandalorian warrior Din Djarin and The Bear's Jeremy Allen White as the voice of Rotta the Hutt. Sigourney Weaver is also among the announced cast. The Mandalorian Grogu will not only mark Star Wars' return to the theaters after seven years in 2026 but will also kickstart a new era for the franchise, bringing the first-ever non-Skywalker Saga tale to the big screen.
Some clips of the movie were shown at D23 2024 exclusively for those in attendance. The general audience is likely to get access to teasers, trailers, and cast interviews. An official trailer can be expected during or around Star Wars Celebration 2025. The three-day event will take place in Tokyo, Japan from April 18 to 20.
Dave Filoni's Mandoverse-New Republic movie (In development)
The mastermind behind Star Wars: The Clone Wars and one of the primary showrunners for the Disney+ shows, Dave Filoni is set to direct his first live-action movie in the franchise. Set in the New Republic era after the events of Return of the Jedi, the untitled movie will tie together the stories of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka.
All we know about the film so far is that Filoni already has the opening sequence in mind. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he said that writing Ahsoka Season 2 has helped him envision the movie better. We should know more about the film in 2025 and get a clearer idea of its potential plot from the second season of Ahsoka.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's New Jedi Order (In development)
Daisy Ridley's Rey will be returning to the big screen in this in-development project that will focus on the rebuilding of the Jedi Order after the defeat of Emperor Palpatine (who returned, somehow) in The Rise of Skywalker. According to rumors, this was the untitled Star Wars film scheduled for December 18, 2026, that was removed from the calendar in November to make space for Ice Age 6. Helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy of Ms. Marvel fame, the movie lost screenwriters Steven Knight, Damon Lindelof, and Justin Britt-Gibson since it was announced. We do not have a plot summary or release window at the moment.
Simon Kinberg's Star Wars Trilogy (In Development)
The Hollywood Reporter reported in early November that Simon Kinberg, previously associated with Star Wars Rebels was signed to write and produce a trilogy for the franchise. Not much is known about the movie, except that it would be detached from the Skywalker Saga but potentially feature Daisy Ridley's Rey as the connection to Episodes VII to IX. We may know more in 2025 about what the movie would focus on and whether it will have any ties with Obaid-Chinoy's New Jedi Order film.
Other feature films likely in development are James Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi set 25,000 years before the Skywalker Saga and Taika Waititi's untitled movie, though Waititi's film is looking like it's off the table completely. Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy recently confirmed to IndieWire that he is working on a Star Wars movie with Adam Project screenwriter Jonathan Tropper.
Previously, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff & DB Weiss, MCU chief Kevin Feige, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, and The Last Jedi maker Rian Johnson were all roped in for potential projects but most or all of them are likely shelved. Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian movie possibly faces a similar fate. We may get confirmation on the same in 2025.
TV Shows
Andor, Season 2 (April, 2025)
The second season of Andor is the MOST anticipated Star Wars project of 2025. After season 1 received critical acclaim and award nominations for incredible writing, acting, and cinematography, the gritty account of the Rebel Alliance's origins will return on April 22, 2025.
Diego Luna will reprise his titular role of Cassian Andor, and so will Genevieve O'Reilly (Mon Mothma), Stellan Skarsgård (Luthen Rael), and Denise Gough (Dedra Meero). Ben Mendelsohn will also return as the villain Director Orson Krennic from Rogue One. An exclusive Empire cover revealed a first look at the characters for its January 2025 edition.
The SAG-AFTRA strikes delayed the release of the show, but it is now set to air right after Star Wars Celebration 2025. Marketing will likely begin well before that, with the first official trailer for the second season coming sometime in January or February next year.
Star Wars: Visions, Season 3 (2025)
Star Wars: Visions is perhaps the most intriguing addition to the franchise in recent years. An anthology of non-canon animated shorts made by studios from around the world, this show allows fellow Star Wars enthusiasts in the movie industry to deliver their unique takes on the narrative. The Emmy-winning series featured shorts exclusively by Japanese anime studios in the first season, followed by a global representation from Spain, Ireland, France, South Korea, the United States, India, and other countries in the second volume.
After two critically acclaimed seasons, the show's return for a third run in 2025 was confirmed in November. The 2024 Disney APAC Content Showcase revealed that Star Wars: Visions will return to its anime roots and bring nine new shorts from nine different Japanese studios, including WIT Studio of Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, and Spy x Family fame. Studios like Kamikaze Douga, Kinema Citrus, and TRIGGER are returning after their first season stint.
No specific release date was revealed, but fans can expect posters, first looks, teasers, and trailers to start dropping from or after the Star Wars Celebration, which is also taking place in Japan.
Ahsoka, Season 2 (Likely starts filming)
Ahsoka season 1 ended on a cliffhanger as Ahsoka and Sabine were left behind on Peridea. With the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn, the show presumably re-introduced the overarching big bad of Favreau and Filoni's "Mandoverse." There is no release window yet, and it is not likely to return in 2025, but filming for the second season could very well start this year.
Filoni told Extra TV a month ago that he has been writing the script, although he is currently the only writer on the team. Natasha Liu Bordozzio, who plays Sabine Wren on the show, said at Dragon Con 2024 that she couldn't attend next year as she would be filming the second season.
Dragon Con 2025 will take place from August 28 to September 1 over Labor Day Weekend. If Ahsoka Season 2 does go into production before that, fans can expect to hear about the recasting of Baylan Skoll within the first six months of the year. Ray Stevenson, who played the character in the first season, passed away in 2023.
Books and Comics
Star Wars: The High Republic, first launched in 2021 with Light of the Jedi, is finally wrapping up. There will be multiple volumes under the series - Into the Light by Claudia Gray on April 1, The Edge of Balance: Premonition by Daniel José Older on April 8, A Valiant Vow by Justina Ireland on May 6, Tempest Breaker by Cavan Scott on May 13, and Trials of the Jedi by Charles Soule - the last book in the series, on June 17.
The Acolyte: Wayseeker by Ireland, set between the end of The High Republic and before the events of The Acolyte featuring Jedi Masters Vernestra Rwoh and Indara, will also be released in May. In the same series, The Crystal Crown by Tessa Gratton will focus on Jecki and Yord's life as Jedi Padawans set beforeThe Acolyte. The book will be released on July 29.
Other potential projects
There are no other officially announced projects as of yet. Star Wars Celebration 2025 should introduce us to the next chunk of movies and TV shows in the franchise, although there are already enough in development. There are rumors that there could be one or more new animated shows to replace The Bad Batch and Young Jedi Adventures will continue to release more episodes with the back half of Season 2.
Last but not least, some good news for prequel fans about the possible returns of Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker and Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi. The two reignited their on and offscreen bromance for Star Wars fans as they reprised their respective roles for the Obi-Wan Kenobi show. Ever since, both of them have been keen on telling more stories.
Twitter user @crabtree_cody shared in December that Christensen said, "We got some stuff brewing," while attending GalaxyCon Columbus.
While this could mean anything, including a season 2 of Obi-Wan Kenobi, fans can surely indulge themselves in some wishful thinking.
2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year of Star Wars. Stay tuned with Dork Side of the Force for all the breaking news.
