The Mandalorian season 2 ended on a high note for fans, as the one and only Luke Skywalker made an appearance to take Grogu away and we got the epic tease of the next live-action series, The Book of Boba Fett. With such an awesome finale, however, we’re left with questions about what’s next for Din Djarin. The entire show so far has followed his journey to keep Baby Yoda safe, and now that he no longer has that responsibility, we have to wonder where the lovable character will do in season 3.
The Disney+ series has been a major success for Star Wars ever since it premiered in 2019, and has gone on to win seven Emmy Awards. That’s pretty impressive for a show with only two seasons under its belt. And so, it was a no-brainer that The Mandalorian season 3 would be in the works, though many other details about it have been kept under wraps.
Is The Mandalorian season 3 happening?
The good news we have right now is that The Mandalorian season 3 is indeed happening. It was announced back in April 2020 by Variety that the third installment was already in the works ahead of the second season premiere later that year.
Though it was rumored Pedro Pascal might not return for the third season because of potential schedule conflicts with his upcoming HBO series The Last of Us, Deadline was quick to debunk that (per Inside the Magic), reporting the following:
Pascal currently stars in Disney+’s hugely popular and acclaimed series The Mandalorian, which recently received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Drama Series. He will continue on the Star Wars series, where he is used sparingly because of the nature of his character, though The Last Of Us has him in first position.
Based on this quote, Din Djarin’s role might be smaller in The Mandalorian season 3. But we’ll take this with a grain of salt for now.
When is The Mandalorian season 3 filming?
It was reported by The Wrap in December 2020 that The Mandalorian season 3 was expected to go into production after The Book of Boba Fett. A report from Screen Rant in January 2021 then shared that the third installment would begin filming in April 2021. As April has come and gone and we’re now nearing June, we still haven’t heard anything concrete about a start date for filming. A conflicting report we found from The DisInsider speculates filming could start in August 2021.
So, as of right now, we’re not completely sure when filming on season 3 will begin, or if it has. We’ll keep you updated once we’ve gotten confirmation that they’ve started.
The Mandalorian season 3 release date
The previous belief was that The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian season 3 would debut on Disney+ in 2021. The Wrap even reported that last December. However, it’s now looking like The Mandalorian will return sometime in 2022. Though an exact release date hasn’t been confirmed, Inverse speculates it could be April 2022, if filming did in fact begin last month.
Fans are in the dark regarding many aspects of The Mandalorian season 3, including the release date. We’ll be sure to keep everyone in the loop once we get more information, and make sure to continue reading our Mandalorian news coverage right here on Dork Side of the Force.
